The idea of contact lense was first suggested in 1508 by Leonardo da Vinci. Contact lenses have been developing for years by its forerunners. Until such, there are numbers of development of different kinds of them such as prescription, therapeutic and fashion contact lenses.

Contact lenses characteristics are classified into soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. They are made of material ( permeable polymers) that permits ample oxygen to get through the eye cornea. It terms of convenience, soft contact lenses are more convenient to apply than rigid gas permeable contact lenses.. Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses would need a lot more time for user to get used to. A few of soft lenses have UV protection shell to safeguard the natural eye. In contrary to Rigid Gas Permeable lenses, soft lenses are more delicate and are a lot more susceptible to eye infection due to its thinner wrapping. RGP has also its advantage over the latter it terms of its application for it is simpler to place and remove.

Daily disposable and extended wear are the two categories of wear schedule. Daily disposables are also named one-day disposable. Such are best for sensitive and allergic eyes. Since daily disposable lenses don't need clean-up, some people considered it as more hassle-free than the other. These type of lenses need to be disposed before sleep, these are intended for day-time wear only.. On the contrary, extended wear lenses are functional for certain period of time without getting rid. There are two varieties of extended wear lenses, there are lenses that are used over a 7 days and others are the ones that can be used in a month. The lenses that can be used in one month are called super permeable simply because have Silicone Hydrogel which provides more oxygen in comparison to other lenses..

Contact lenses have different purposes. They can be used for fad, corrective and therapeutic purposes. There are various types of cosmetic lenses to choose from such as light-filtering tint, enhancement tint and color tint. Color tints alter the shade of the eyes into different colors but mostly violet, amethyst and green. There are also lenses designed for sports known as light-filtering tints. Orthokeratology lenses are also known as Corneal Reshaping contact lenses that temporarily remedy nearsightedness or mild myopia eye disorder. These special lenses are worn out during sleep and taken away after awakening. The material used by this is rigid gas-permeable.
